Ultrasound in NYC

Great City Medical

As a diagnostic technique for women’s health concerns, nothing quite beats the ease, efficiency, and safety of ultrasound.

Is an Ultrasound Dangerous?

It doesn’t involve radiation like X-ray does and is completely painless, most often involving the use of a transducer moved gently along the top of your skin. The device transmits sound waves, which harmlessly bounce off tissue inside the body to create an image of internal structures. In this way, ultrasound provides a miraculous look inside our bodies – without side effects or health risks.

Most commonly known as the procedure in which a hand-held device is used to monitor the health of an unborn baby, ultrasound has many medical and gynecological uses.

Types of Ultrasounds

The most common type of gynecologic ultrasound is transabdominal (TA) ultrasound, in which a transducer is placed on your belly to create an image of tissue and organs in your pelvic region.

Transvaginal (TV) ultrasound involves inserting a slender transducer into the vagina to more closely examine the ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina, and fallopian tubes to screen for disease or potential causes of symptoms such as abdominal pain and excessive or irregular vaginal bleeding.

This type of ultrasound may be used to identify ovarian cysts associated with endometriosis, a serious gynecological issue that can cause heavy, painful periods and require medical treatment. TV ultrasound may also identify the presence of tumors, uterine fibroids, or polyps.

In some cases, more detailed imaging is required, and gynecologist Dr. Yelena Tsyba may recommend a sonohysterography. In this type of TV ultrasound, the uterus is filled with a sterile fluid prior to the transvaginal ultrasound to identify blood flow blockages, polyps, tumors, or other abnormalities. Dr. Tsyba uses a thin plastic tube inserted via the vagina to administer fluid into the uterus.
